Roving Mars in IMAX

The new IMAX flick, Roving Mars, is about the Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers and features a bunch of photos taken by them on the surface, including spectacular animations created by combining sequential stills. Alas and alack, even though the rovers took stereoscopic views, there is no 3D in the film.

Seattle audiences will have to wait to see it cuz it ain’t here yet. (Though you can still get a space fix by going to the Pacific Science Center to see Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D which, yes, is in 3D.)

Meanwhile, Emil Lakdawalla blogged a review of Roving Mars over at the Planetary Society web site. The Society was fairly involved in the rover missions, sponsoring the contest that allowed school kids to name the gadgets, getting stuff placed on the rovers (like MarsDials and silica glass DVDs containing the names of supporters and emblazoned with coded messages that folks could decipher from photos straight from Mars), and some really cool educational programs that got school kids to Jet Propulsion Labs to meet key players and play with the freaking prototypes!!! Oh, and not to mention playing a key role in generating public support for the entire effort.
